9 March 2020, from https://www.researchgate.net/publication/327429813_Large_Scale_Application_of_Self-Healing_Concrete_Design_Construction_and_Testing
The article focuses on the feasibility of incorporating
self-healing technologies into full-scale structures on a live construction
site in South Wales, United Kingdom (UK). An analysis of four full-scale
reinforced concrete trials with different self-healing techniques proved to be
successful with an average crack width between 0.12mm to 0.28mm upon unloading
6 months after. The techniques consist of the addition of microcapsules containing sodium
silicate, shape memory polymer tendons, bacteria concrete, and flow networks. The
article produced a detailed description of the design, construction, testing, and
monitoring procedure. As it was the first large scale experiment conducted,
improvements can further accomplish. The article highlighted the necessity of
identifying each “damaged mechanism” as each technique is suited for different
applications. The article also informed that additional research was initiated to
further address the severity of damage and increase the reliability, autonomy, and applicability of the available techniques.
One of the techniques consists of bacteria concrete and flow
networks which use the same self-healing agent as our research project.
Incorporation of bacteria agents into concrete panel has shown to produce the
smallest mean crack width of 0.07mm after 6 months (before loading). The
effectiveness of respective self-healing technology is uncertain in the long
run due to the duration of the research. While the research article consists of
6-month comparison data, it still manages to validate our research idea by
being the first large scale research that uses bacteria as a healing agent.

Hi Ardini very interesting article and definitely related to your project. Reading this summary affirms to me the possibility of having concrete structures autonomously heal in the coming years, making our future careers very very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI do want to echo what Iskandar said in class about the use of bacteria to heal concrete in drainage systems. It sounds very doable here in singapore hahaha.
Lastly i found a odd sentence in paragraph 2 line 5-6 "As it was the first large scale experiment conducted, improvements can further accomplish". Do take a look!
Hi Brien,
DeleteThank you for your feedback. I will try my best to paraphrase the highlighted sentence. I am glad you are supporting my team's proposed solution. We hope to make it into reality one day!

Ardini
Dear Ardini
ReplyDeleteThe ideas that both the article and your project is propagating is not only interesting but also desirable. Whether the ideas are feasible and viable remains to be seen, but this project your team is on is certainly a great start.
Moving on, I found no issues with your annotated summary except for 2.
1) In the third sentence of the 2nd paragraph. I had the misconception that the microcapsules can contain either of the 5 techniques on first glance.
1.1) That sentence can be better worded as "The techniques include the addition of microcapsules containing sodium silicate, usage of shape memory polymer tendons, application of bacteria concrete, and utilisation of flow networks.
2) The 1st sentence of the last paragraph may sound confusing as new readers may have perceived "bacteria concrete and flow networks" as 2 different techniques, instead of one technique which is mentioned in that sentence.
2.1) In addition, the sentence structure can be improved. You may wish to reword the sentence as "The technique of utilising both bacteria concrete and flow networks uses the same self-healing agent as our research project."
All in all, good job for the annotated summary and project you are working on. All the best in your upcoming exams.
Best wishes
Jiang Seng
Hi JS,
DeleteThank you for your feedback, i will adjust the sentence structure soon. All the best for your upcoming exams too!
